Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone.
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. General dentists commonly do simple extractions. In a simple extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then the dentist uses an instrument called a forceps to remove the tooth.
A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure. It is used if a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet.
Why might a Tooth Extraction be needed?
A Tooth Extraction can be used to correct an existing problem or as a means of preventing future ones. Some issues that can be rectified via an extraction include:
How is a Tooth Extraction performed?
Step 1 – the No obligation, free of charge initial consultation
Your dentist will assess the condition of your mouth to confirm that an extraction can proceed without complications. X-rays may be taken to help your dentist decide the best method of removing the tooth. After you have discussed and agreed a treatment plan, surgery can begin.
Step 2 – the Extraction
There are two types of extraction methods.
Method 1
A simple extraction is possible in the case of teeth that are visible in the mouth. With this method, the tooth is loosened and then removed with forceps.
Method 2
A surgical extraction may be required if the tooth has broken off at the gum line or is buried out of sight in the gum. Your dentist will begin by numbing the area around the extraction site with anesthetic. In certain cases, a general anesthetic will be recommended. Next, s/he will open the gum tissue over the tooth and, in the case of impaction, remove any covering of bone. Sometimes it is necessary to cut the tooth in half to facilitate the extraction.
The tissue connecting tooth to bone is then removed, and finally, the tooth is extracted and the incision is closed with removable stitches.
Step 3- the Aftercare
For the vast majority of patients, tooth extraction is a quick, hassle- free procedure with minimal downtime. Your dentist may prescribe painkillers, and will also provide detailed instructions to ensure a quick and painless recovery.
How much will a Tooth Extraction cost?
A single extraction starts from just £50. If you have additional requirements, the total price will depend on the treatment type needed.
