A dental implant is a well-tested treatment procedure which will greatly improve the quality of your life. Tooth replacement with an implant in it will appear really nice and natural, plus they are very safe, as well. It gives the feeling of natural teeth and allows you to eat whatever you want without pain or problems. Dental implants the best alternative to denture. What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a post or frame that is placed underneath your gum in the jawbone.  Once the implant has been placed, it integrates into the jawbone and provides stable, long lasting support for replacement teeth, whether in the form of crowns, bridges or implant-retained dentures. Implant is a permanent alternative to dentures or missing tooth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer an effective, comfortable and aesthetic solution to the problem of missing teeth.

Improved appearance

When teeth are lost, bone loss in the jawbone can occur.  This shrinkage can cause a loss of facial volume, resulting in a gaunt appearance.  Dental implants can help reverse this process.  Unlike dentures, implants function like your natural teeth.  While traditional dentures sit on the gum, implants are designed to fuse with the jaw in the same way as a dental root does, thus preventing bone loss and preserving bone density. This helps prevent the change in facial structure and volume that can accompany missing teeth, and helps restore a youthful appearance.

Restored chewing ability

Unlike traditional dentures that can slip and cause problems when you chew, an implant is completely stable.  By restoring the natural chewing function, an implant means you can enjoy any type of food you like with confidence.

Increased Comfort and Confidence

As traditional dentures sit on top of the jawbone and gum, bone loss can quickly occur.  This shrinkage alters the fit of the denture, and can cause the denture to slip and slide in the mouth, resulting in irritation and sore spots.  As implants are anchored securely to the jawbone, this problem is avoided.

Implants also eliminate the need to worry about reapplying denture adhesives, and take away the fear of your dentures popping out when you speak or smile.

Improved Speech

When dentures become loose and start to slip, it’s natural for the facial muscles to tense in an effort to hold the denture in place.  This tension can cause changes in your natural voice, resulting in mumbling or slurred speech.  Gaps caused by missing teeth can also result in lisping or slurring.

Implants restore your natural speech, and allow you to speak with confidence.

Are implants suitable for me?

Implants are suitable for patients of all ages, and may be the best choice for anyone missing one or more teeth as a result of injury, illness or decay.  They are also the preferable choice for patients who are no longer able to wear removable dentures.

However, implants may not be suitable for everyone, and are not recommended for pregnant women, children or people with certain types of chronic illness or immunosuppression.  People who grind or clench their teeth are also not good candidates for dental implants, as this habit can place too much pressure on the implant.

The general condition of the mouth can also affect your suitability, as implants require a stable environment to stand the best chance of success.  It’s therefore advisable to treat any ongoing issues with your teeth or gums before starting treatment.

If you have any concerns about whether you are a suitable candidate, don’t hesitate to contact us for further advice.

What types of implant do you offer?

Implants are available in a range of prices, heights and sizes to ensure the most tailored solution to your needs.  Most implants are made of titanium; a strong, durable and biocompatible solution. Zirconium implants are also available, and offer a highly aesthetic alternative to the traditional titanium.

Nobel Biocare implants, our preferred choice in most cases, carry the following advantages.

  • A life-long guarantee
  • Excellent, reliable quality with a proven track record spanning several decades of successful implantations
  • Highly Biocompatible (easily recognized and accepted by the body)

We also carry Straumann,  Ankylos, Implant Direct and SGS dental systems.

During your consultation, your dentist will discuss with you the best options based on the condition of your bone and gum.  This will help you decide upon the best solution to meet both your treatment needs and budget.

What’s the process for fitting an implant?

Step 1 - the No Obligation, Free of Charge Consultation

During the consultation, your dentist will make use of x-rays and if needed, organize CT scans to evaluate the condition of your mouth/ bone tissue to make sure you are a suitable candidate for implants.  They will then discuss your personalised treatment plan with you to ensure you are confortable and happy with the process.

Sometimes, other types of treatment may be needed before implant surgery can start.  If so, your dentist will discuss this with you as part of the treatment plan.  Possible treatments include:

  • Extraction in the case of a decayed tooth.  If an extraction is required, we recommend the area is allowed to heal for between 4 and 6 months before implant surgery.
  • Bone Augmentation – If you have insufficient bone in the lower jaw, a bone augmentation may be needed.  This involves building up the bone in the jaw by using your own natural bone and/or by using donor, processed or synthetic bone materials.  In the event of a bone augmentation, a healing period of 4-6 months is required before implant surgery can begin.
  • Sinus Lift- if there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw, you may require a Sinus Lift.  In this treatment, the sinus membrane is moved or “lifted” upward, and bone is added below the sinus. After a Sinus Lift, a minimum of 6-8 months is needed before implantation.

(Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to perform these treatments at the same time as the implant is placed. During your initial consultation, your dentist will assess the condition and density of your bone to determine if this is possible, and discuss the option with you further).

Once all the conditions for surgery have been met, and the recommended healing time has passed, the procedure can begin.

Step 2- Implant Placement.

A small incision is made into the gum to expose the jaw. The implant is placed and the incision is closed.  After placement, a healing time of 4-6 months is required, during which time the bone will ossify around the implant.  If you require temporary teeth during the healing process, you may either continue to wear your existing dentures or opt for fixed or removable temporary teeth made by our laboratory.

Step 2 - Impression for Final Restoration (e.g. crown, bridge or implant retained denture)

The implant site is exposed via a small incision to allow access to the implant. Impressions are taken for the final restoration (a crown, bridge or denture) to be made.

Step 3 - Fitting of Final Restoration.

An attachment called an abutment is fixed or screwed to the implant. The abutment acts as the anchor for the restoration, which is now secured in place.

Will it hurt?

In the hands of our highly trained and experienced Implantologists, dental implant surgery is a relatively straight forward procedure with minimal discomfort or pain (so minimal, in fact, that many patients have described the surgery as less painful than a tooth extraction). The surgery can be done in a matter of minutes (for a single implant), under local anesthetic.  After surgery, you will be prescribed antibiotics and pain killers to ensure your ongoing comfort.

Can I have an implant if I have bone loss?

The quality of the jawbone is critical to the success of an implant.  If considerable bone loss has already occurred as a result of missing teeth, there are safe and effective methods of correcting the bone loss to allow an implant to be placed.   At your Free Initial Consultation, our Implantologist will assess the quality of the bone using a CT scan, and discuss the next steps with you should augmentation be necessary.

Do I need an implant to replace each of my missing teeth?

Not always.  One implant post can hold one implant restoration or crown. Two implants can secure a bridge or partial denture. Four to six implants can be enough to stabilize an upper or lower denture.  Six or more implants can easily and safely hold a full set of 12-14 teeth. Your Patient Coordinator will be able to talk through the suitable options with you after your initial consultation.

Are Implants reliable?

Dental implants have been in use for more than 30 years and are proven to offer a safe, reliable and effective means of replacing lost teeth.  The implant itself is usually made of titanium, a biocompatible material that is readily accepted by the body. Implants come with a 98% success rate and with proper care can last a lifetime

How Do I Care for Dental Implants?

Dental implants require the same level and type of care as real teeth.  Once your implant is fitted, it’s important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine, including brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
