Dental implants are placed to your jaw bone. In case there is not sufficient quantity of bone to fix the implants properly, sinus lift is carried out. Thanks to cutting edge dental care technologies this can be done by a simple dental surgery through which artificial bone is placed into the jaw.
A sinus lift may be necessary when there is not sufficient bone in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed.
As a result, lifelong dental implant may be fitted to the recreated bone.
What is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift (sometimes called a sinus augmentation) is a procedure in which the sinus membranes are moved or “lifted” upward, and bone is added to the upper jaw in the area between your molars and pre-molars. The added bone may be your own natural bone (usually taken from your back lower jaw), donor bone or processed/ synthetic bone materials.
Why is a Sinus Lift needed?
A sinus lift may be needed if there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw to indicate a dental implant. It may also be needed if the sinus has dropped too close to the jaw to allow for a successful implant placement.
Low bone density can come about from a variety of causes, including:
How is a Sinus Lift performed?
Step 1 – the No Obligation, Free of Charge Consultation
During your Initial Consultation, your dentist will assess your bone condition with the assistance of xrays. A CT scan is also arranged to allow your dentist to measure the height/ width of the bone and assess the condition of your sinus. If your dentist decides that a Sinus Lift is necessary, s/he will talk you through the procedure and answer any concerns or questions you may have. Once you are happy to proceed with the treatment plan, your dentist will arrange a suitable time to begin surgery (if it’s convenient for you, it may be possible to start straight away).
Step 2- the Surgery
Your dentist will cut into the gum tissue in the back molar area. The tissue is then raised, and a small window is opened in the exposed bone. Next, the sinus membrane is gently pushed up and away from the jaw, and bone is added to the space left by the lifted sinus. Once the bone has been packed in to the required amount, the area is closed with stitches.
Step 3 – the Aftercare
Most patients experience only a mild discomfort after a Sinus Lift, although some swelling or bleeding from the mouth and nose may be expected. Following the right aftercare procedure is essential to the success of the surgery. Your dentist will of course give you full instructions on what you should and shouldn’t do once surgery has been completed, and may prescribe medication to reduce congestion and inflammation. The most important thing to remember is to avoid as much as possible any activity that may cause the stitches to loosen or the bone to dislodge, including forceful sneezing or blowing the nose.
When will I be able to have an implant after a sinus lift?
Typically, after a Sinus Lift, you will need to allow a healing period of 6-8 months before an implant can be placed. During this time, the replacement bone will fuse with your jaw, creating a strong foundation for the future implant. Alternatively you might have both sinus lift and implants placed at the same time. A thorough assessment by your implantologist specialist with the aid of the ct scan can confirm your chances for a combined procedure.
How much will a Sinus Lift cost?
A Sinus Lift starts from just £620/700 EUR. If you have additional requirements, the total price will depend on the treatment type needed. Bone graft material and the application of membranes mean extra costs.
