Root canal treatment (also called ‘endodontics') is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (called the ‘pulp') is infected through decay or injury. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases your tooth could darken in colour, which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died (or is dying). This would need root canal treatment.
If Root Canal Treatment is not carried out, the infection can spread and the tooth will need to be extracted. Root canal treatment is a dental procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. The treatment should not be painful and certainly no more unpleasant than having a filling.
The main goal of the treatment is to try and keep the original tooth. The ‘dead’ tooth will be safe after the treatment, however, because it is more brittle, you may need to have a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment is a procedure used to treat and remove an infection of the root canal system at the center of the tooth. This infection may be the result of decay, damage (usually resulting from a fall or similar trauma) or leaky fillings.
Why might Root Canal Treatment be needed?
Root Canal Treatment may be indicated if you experience:
Sometimes, these symptoms may go into remission. While this can give the illusion of a healed tooth, it actually suggests that the infection has spread. Further symptoms may eventually begin to develop, including:
How is Root canal Treatment performed?
Step 1 – the No Obligation, Free of Charge Consultation
During your Initial Consultation, your dentist will assess the condition of the mouth and the infected tooth to determine whether root canal treatment is required. If tests prove the need for Root Canal Treatment, your dentist will talk you through the procedure and answer any concerns or questions you may have. Once you are happy to proceed with the treatment plan, your dentist will arrange a suitable time to begin (if it’s convenient for you, it may be possible to start straight away).
Step 2- the Surgery
A permanent restoration (either a filing or crown) is usually recommended after root cancel treatment. This helps replace lost tooth structure and prevent the introduction of bacteria. A filing is used if there is still enough tooth structure to hold it. If a significant portion of the tooth has been lost to decay, a post of either metal or glass fibre may be fitted in one of the tooth canals to lend strength. A crown is then used to cap the tooth.
Step 3 – the Aftercare
While it is important to follow the detailed aftercare instructions your dentist will provide, most patients experience minimal effects after treatment. Although some mild soreness is normal, any discomfort can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How much will Root Canal Treatment cost?
Root Canal Treatment starts from just £110 (125 EUR)/canal all inclusive. If you have additional requirements, the total price will depend on the treatment type needed.
