A bone graft is a dental surgery technique which is similar to sinus lift or bone augmentation but it is not the same. This treatment is necessary in case of lack of bone in your jaw which cannot be extended with artificial bone. Instead of it a piece of bone is taken from your mandible and they graft it into your mouth.
As result of the bone graft dental implants can be placed appropriately.
What is a Bone Graft?
A bone graft involves taking bone from another area of the body (usually the chin or the lower back jaw) or using donor or synthetic bone to rebuild an area of low bone density.
Why is a Bone Graft needed?
A bone graft may be needed if there is insufficient bone in the lower jaw to support a dental implant.
Low bone density can come about from a variety of causes, including:
How is a Bone Graft performed?
Step 1 – the No Obligation, Free of Charge Consultation
During your Free Initial Consultation, your dentist will assess your bone condition with the assistance of xrays. A CT scan will be arranged to allow your dentist to measure the height/ width of the bone. If your dentist decides that a bone graft is necessary, s/he will talk you through the procedure and answer any concerns or questions you may have. Once you are happy to proceed with the treatment plan, your dentist will arrange a suitable time to begin surgery.
Step 2- the Surgery
Surgery is performed under local sedation. Local anesthetic is used in both the area that requires the bone graft and the area that will be donating the bone. An incision in the gum around the area of the bone graft site is made to assess the amount and type of bone required. In most cases, the donated bone will come from the chin. In this case, an incision is made to expose the chin bone, and the required amount of bone and bone marrow is removed. If necessary, your dentist will replace the harvested bone with bone graft material, before closing the area with stitches.
Next, the harvested bone will be secured to the recipient site using small titanium screws. If needed, some of the donated bone marrow will be packed around the bone, before the area is covered with membrane and stitched closed.
Step 3 – the Aftercare
After surgery, your dentist may provide antibiotics, pain medication and antibacterial mouthwash to minimize any risk of infection or discomfort. Full aftercare instructions (including advice on avoiding certain foods or putting pressure on the area during the healing process) will also be provided.
When will I be able to have an implant after a Bone Graft?
After a bone graft, you will need to allow a healing period of 4-6 months before an implant can be placed. During this time, the replacement bone will fuse with your jaw, creating a strong foundation for the future implant.
